Various labor market indicators are also showing growing weakness in the economy, he said. Societe GeneraleNational Federation of Independent Business data shows further labor market weakness is likely to come, as small business hiring plans continue to fall. Both stats would suggest a rising unemployment rate going forward. In the meantime, the labor market has consistently proven resilient despite high interest rates, and stocks have enjoyed an eye-popping rally to new highs. Some also argue that labor market data points like the rising unemployment rate have to be shown with context.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump arrives for the start of his civil fraud trial at New York State Supreme Court on October 02, 2023 in New York City. Chubb was one of more than 30 companies that refused to craft a bond that would put the massive business fraud judgment on pause, attorneys for Trump said in a New York appeals court filing Monday. Appeal bonds aim to prevent the loser of a court judgment from using the appeals process to delay or avoid paying their penalties. But "within the past week," he said, Chubb reversed course and "notified Defendants that it could not accept real property as collateral." "Though disappointing, this decision was not surprising given that Chubb was the only surety willing to even consider accepting real estate as collateral," Garten said.

Ten days ago, Chubb underwrote Trump's $92 million bond for his E. Jean Carroll defamation appeal. But Chubb declined to handle the far higher appeal bond Trump now needs in his NY civil fraud case. The insurance giant had faced blowback after agreeing to the Carroll bond. Chubb's "no, thanks" comes just five days after the company's CEO, Evan Greenberg, sent a letter to brokers, clients, and investors addressing widespread criticism over the Carroll bond. The Carroll bond was underwritten by Chubb subsidiary Federal Insurance Company.

CNN —Rep. Virginia Foxx, the Republican chairwoman of the House Education Committee, said Tuesday that Harvard University has failed to comply with her unprecedented subpoena for documents on campus antisemitism. Harvard turned over another trove of documents about campus antisemitism to Congress on Monday evening. Foxx argued that heavy redactions by Harvard made several documents “useless,” while many others were duplicates of documents previously submitted. The Education Committee did not detail specifically which steps lawmakers are now considering to enforce its subpoena. “Harvard denounced antisemitism on our campus and have made clear that the University will continue to take actions to combat antisemitism in any form,” Newton said.

CNN —Harvard University turned over another trove of documents about campus antisemitism to Congress on Monday evening in response to an unprecedented subpoena from the House Education and Workforce Committee. Harvard was facing a 5 pm ET Monday deadline to respond to the subpoena, the first issued since the House Education Committee was founded in March 1867. “Harvard has produced documents in response to the Committee’s subpoena,” Nick Barley, a spokesperson for the House Education Committee, told CNN on Monday evening. “The Committee is currently reviewing those documents.”If Harvard had not responded, the committee would have had to consider further steps to enforce its subpoena. “Harvard denounced antisemitism on our campus and have made clear that the University will continue to take actions to combat antisemitism in any form,” Newton said.

The story of Brooksley Born is not only the tale of a remarkable regulator whose Cassandra-like warnings — if heeded — could've prevented the great financial crisis from exploding into raging, ruinous enormity. Not long after she assumed chairmanship of the CFTC, Born started to feel a lingering unease with the rapidly expanding derivatives market. So to Rubin, Born was more of an inconvenience than anything, and she certainly wasn't in his club. Not long after, Treasury officials lobbied Congress to pass legislation preventing the CFTC from being able to regulate the OTC derivatives market. In the months and years that followed, it became increasingly hard to deny that the multi-trillion-dollar OTC derivatives market was the root cause of the great financial crisis.

New York CNN —The co-chair of a newly formed task force fighting antisemitism at Harvard University has abruptly stepped down after barely a month at the helm. The Harvard Jewish Alumni Alliance, which the Globe said is leading the campaign, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. When Garber announced the presidential task force on antisemitism, he tapped Sadun and Harvard professor Derek Penslar to co-chair it. Penslar remains on the presidential task force, after receiving significant internal and external support. The rest of the antisemitism task force is being filled out by various students, professors and administrators at Harvard.

New York CNN —Harvard University and its interim president have condemned an image circulated on social media by pro-Palestinian campus groups, prompting the groups to remove and apologize for the posting. The three groups that circulated the image issued their own statements criticizing it. The groups said they had removed the image, but “it should never have been published to begin with. Garber assumed the post of interim president after former Harvard President Claudine Gay resigned last month amid criticism that she and the school had not responded sufficiently against antisemitism on campus. The criticism about Harvard’s response to antisemitism on campus has prompted some major financial donors to withdraw support of the school.

New York CNN —A congressional committee investigating campus antisemitism took the unprecedented step of issuing multiple subpoenas to Harvard University on Friday, compelling the Ivy League school to turn over documents lawmakers are seeking. Three different Harvard officials are being subpoenaed: Alan Garber, Harvard’s interim president; Penny Pritzker, the billionaire leader of the Harvard Corporation, the governing board of the school; and N.P. The subpoenas order the Harvard officials to produce a series of documents by 5 pm ET on March 4. That list included meeting minutes since Hamas’ October 7 terror attacks on Israel and communications by university officials related to antisemitism. “Given the breadth and extensive nature of the information Harvard has provided to the Committee, it is unfortunate that the Committee has chosen to issue subpoenas,” Swain said.

HOUSTON (AP) — A motive for why a woman in a trenchcoat opened fire in celebrity pastor Joel Osteen's megachurch in Texas remained unclear Monday after the shooting sent worshippers rushing for safety in between busy Sunday services. Police say two off-duty officers working security at Osteen's church, one of the largest megachurches in the U.S., shot and killed the suspect. Osteen said the violence could have been worse if the shooting had happened during the earlier and larger late Sunday morning service. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner did not identify the suspect at a news conference Sunday while standing near Osteen. The woman began shooting and was confronted by two off-duty officers, a Houston police officer and an agent with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, who returned fire.

CNN —The Department of Education on Tuesday announced a new investigation into Harvard University’s handling of alleged discrimination on its campus after a federal civil rights complaint was filed late last month against Harvard on behalf of Muslim and Palestinian students. The students said in the complaint that the school failed to protect them from harassment and intimidation, according to the Muslim Legal Fund of America. The Department of Education is already investigating the Harvard and other universities over alleged incidents of antisemitism and Islamophobia on campus. “They are trying to walk the campus but they’re getting accosted because they look like someone who might be Palestinian or Muslim. Harvard announced the changes on Sunday evening, saying Frazier will start Wednesday to fill the open seat on the Harvard Corporation, the powerful yet secretive board under fire its handling of the recent controversies. Frazier, who graduated Harvard Law School in 1978, served as CEO of Merck and sat on the board of ExxonMobil, is widely respected in the business community. CNN —Black History Month, which gets underway this week, is a chance to give Americans the timely reminder that you can’t teach our history honestly without understanding Black struggle and triumph. There are few aspects of America’s past that haven’t been impacted by conscientious Black people and their resistance to systemic racism and illiberal democracy. The situation at Harvard has been made more dire by the university’s failure to push back sufficiently against broader political attacks. Another vocal critic of Penslar is the former Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who was also an outspoken opponent of Gay’s.
